Congratulations to the Australian people for voting ‘Yes’ to marriage equality in the national plebiscite. Fairness, tolerance and common sense – which we like to think are part of the Australian character – have won out.
There is a little way to go yet. Legislation needs to be enacted, guidelines, regulations and marriage forms need to be updated. Our politicians need now, to act on the clear wishes of the Australian people and not get bogged down in discrimination disguised as ‘religious exemptions’.
I am eagerly looking forward, to marrying my first gay couples. Making the public and loving commitment of marriage to another adult, will at last, be a right for everyone.
I have had the privilege of conducting ACT civil unions for a number of couples in the past. If you were among this group and would like to take the marriage step, I would love to help you celebrate by halving my regular fee to solemnize your marriage.
