Congratulations to the Australian people for voting ‘Yes’ to marriage equality in the national plebiscite. Fairness, tolerance and common sense – which we like to think are part of the Australian character – have won out.
There is a little way to go yet. Legislation needs to be enacted, guidelines, regulations and marriage forms need to be updated. Our politicians need now, to act on the clear wishes of the Australian people and not get bogged down in discrimination disguised as ‘religious exemptions’.
I am eagerly looking forward, to marrying my first gay couples. Making the public and loving commitment of marriage to another adult, will at last, be a right for everyone.
